BOSTON — Led by nine first place finishes, including a shattering of a 2004 school record, the North Reading boys’ indoor track team improved their season record to 2-0 as they completed a convincing 69-31 victory over the Pentucket Panthers on Jan. 10.

The highlight of the meet was the 4×200 Meter Relay team of Caleb Sands, Ryan McGuire, Brodie Mann and Nathan Miller smashing the school record in the event set in 2004 with their time of 1:33.59, which also qualifies them for the New Balance National Championship in the Rising Stars division.

“This group is a very talented, dedicated and special group,” said Hornets head coach Ryan Spinney about the relay team. “It is such a privilege to have a group of four seniors, such as these gentlemen, set such a high standard of effort and performance for themselves and their teammates. They earned this record and we could not be happier for them to accomplish the feat of qualifying for the national championships.”

The Hornets dominated in multiple events, including a sweep of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in both the 55 Meter Hurdles and the High Jump. Both events were won by Senior co-captain Jacob Duval who ran 9.29 in the hurdles and cleared 5′ 8″ in the high jump.

In the Hurdles, Sophomores Kaio Pancini (9.38) and Nico Johnson (9.59) finished the sweep, while Sophomore Daniil Baranetski (4′ 10″) and Freshman Ben Cook (4′ 10″) took home a tie for 2nd overall to complete the Hornet sweep of the event.

McGuire and Sands continued their dominance as they took 1st and 3rd respectively in the 55 Meter Dash in times of 6.75 and 7.00. McGuire’s time of 6.75 was good enough for 4th all time in NRHS history. Miller and Mann took their efforts to the 300 Meter Dash, where they went 1-2 in times of 36.71 and 38.65. McGuire and Miller also had strong days in the long jump as they recorded marks of 21′ 0″ and 19′ 7″, respectively to take 1st and 3rd in the event.

Senior co-captain Nick Fabrizio and Johnson took 1st and 2nd in the 2 Mile Run as they finished with times of 11:30.19 and 11:35.71. Senior Michael Hemme had another solid day as he took 1st in the 1000 Meter Run (2:50.99) and 2nd in the 1 Mile Run (4:51.25) to add to the Hornet point total. Senior Rocco Tammaro took 3rd in the 1 Mile with a time of 5:39.12 and Senior Ben Meier took third in the 1000 Meter Run with a time of 3:02.92.

Senior Kyle McCormack threw a personal best toss of 40′ 5″ to win the Shot Put for the Hornets and Junior Logan Lamont took 2nd overall in the 600 Meter Run with a strong time of 1:30.94.

The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, as they will be traveling to the Reggie Lewis Center to compete in the MSTCA Division 4 State Relay Championship.
