LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield high boys’ indoor track coach Christine Smith gave out five awards at the team’s end-of-season banquet recently.

The team’s MVP Award went to junior Eli Mendese while the Lynnfield Athletic Association Award went to senior co-captain Davius Chan.

Senior co-captain, Joe Cucciniello, took home the Track Athlete of the Year Award while fellow senior, Ethan Francis, received the Field Athlete of the Year Award.

Francis was a Cape Ann League All-Star this year in the high jump.

The Coaches Award went to senior Sirvanth Tudi.

It was a successful season for the Pioneers this winter as they finished at 3-1 in the Cape Ann League Baker Division after going 0-4 the previous season when they were in the CAL Kinney Division.

“I was thrilled with our season this year,” stated Smith, who just competed her eighth season at the helm. “We came in second in the Baker Division and we broke seven school records. It was a memorable season for sure.”

Along with Cucciniello, Chan, Francis and Tudi, the team will also lose seniors Slate Lopilato and AJ Chiaradonna to graduation.

“They were a fantastic group of seniors that will be missed terribly as they set great examples for their underclassmen teammates,” said Smith, who will now be coaching the Lynnfield High girls’ outdoor team, again, this spring.

Next winter, the Pioneers should be in good shape as they are slated to return over 20 members including CAL All-Stars, Mendese and junior Dillon Reilly who were All-Stars in the high jump. Mendese also was an All-Star in the long jump.

“We anticipate a lot of kids returning including a rising senior group,” said Smith.
