Warriors run past Watertown in first dual meet
WATERTOWN — After four weeks of training, the Wakefield Memorial High boys’ outdoor track team put its hard work to good use as it prevailed against Watertown in the season opener by an 85-51 score on Monday afternoon at the Victory Field track facility.
It was also the Middlesex League Freedom division opener for the Warriors.
“We came out after four weeks of training and had a good meet against Watertown,” said Head Coach Ruben Reinoso.
The Warriors started out with senior captain Joe Hurton coming in second and running a great time of 60.6 seconds in the 400 hurdles. Brian Dickey, a senior, was third in the event with a time of 64.0 seconds.
In the mile, senior captain Ian Ritchie ran much of the race by himself. He came in first with a time of 4:39. Rich Custodio, a junior, was third with a time of 4:59.
In the 4×100 relay, Wakefield was first with a time of 46.1 seconds and the runners were junior Jian Glen Gallardo, junior Eric Chi, senior Kyle Geaney and junior Kevin Russo.
In the 110 hurdles, Zach Conlon, a junior was second with a time of 19.4 seconds.
Chi was first with a time of 11.6 seconds in the 100 meter dash and Gallardo was third with a time of 12.2 seconds.
In the 400 meter run, Cam Yasi, a senior, was second with a time of 55.9 seconds and Joe Boudreau, a junior, was third with a time of 56.4 seconds.
Junior Alec Rodgers was first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:07 and Alex Guerriero, a junior, was second with a time of 2:14.
In the 200 meter dash, Russo was first with a time of 24.8 seconds and Geaney was third with a time of 26.2 seconds.
Chris Skeldon, a junior, was second in the two mile with a time of 11:19 and Tommy Lucey, a freshman, was third with a time of 11:51.
In the shot put, Jared Regan, a junior, was second with a throw 39-3 and Patrick Redmond, a freshman, was third with a throw of 36-0.
Sophomore Joe Connell was first in the discus with a throw of 112-2 and Dan Wensley, a senior, was third with a throw of 99-1.
In the javelin, Will Bergendahl, a senior, was first with a throw of 149-1 and Russo was second with a throw of 136-11.
Senior Pat Casaletto was second in the high jump with a jump of 5-5 and Dickey was third as he cleared 5-3.
In the long jump, Gallardo was second with a jump of 17-4 and Casaletto was third with a distance of 16-11 1/2.
In the triple jump, Hurton had a great leap of 40-0 3/4 and was first. Geaney was third with a jump of 35-3.
The 4×400 relay team finished first with a time of 3:50.5 and the runners were Hurton, sophomore Adam Roberto, senior Tyler Strauss and Ritchie.
“Overall it was a good starting point,” said Reinoso. “Joe Hurton qualified for states in the hurdles and triple jump. Ian Ritchie qualified for states in the mile and Will Bergendahl qualified in the javelin. The athletes of the meet were Joe Connell, Joe Hurton and Alec Rodgers.“
The Warriors return to competition tomorrow afternoon when they take on Stoneham at 3:30 p.m. at Stoneham High School.
