Warriors go for Freedom Div. sweep against Stoneham on Tuesday

BOSTON — The WMHS boys’ track and field kicked off 2018 with a win over Watertown on Tuesday, Jan. 2. The Warriors entered the meet with plenty of momentum after beating a very good Burlington team the week before to keep their record perfect at 3-0. Tuesday’s meet was a little less stressful for Wakefield as they put forward a complete team effort from start to finish to overwhelm the Raiders, 73-18.

Senior Riley Brackett (4:37.93) and sophomore Tanner Jellison (4:38.50) had huge personal records in the mile, with Bracket taking 1st and 6th overall in the league while Jellison finished right behind his teammate at 2nd and 7th overall. Junior Casey Brackett took 3rd at 4:55.59.

In the two mile, senior David Lee ran an excellent race, putting together a personal-best time of 10:40.68, which was good for 2nd place and 11th overall in the league. Junior Billy Stevens finished first at 10:37.84 and 10th overall. Junior Carter Margolis finished 3rd at 10:54.03.

The Warriors took 2nd through 5th place in the 55 meter dash, led by senior Henry Stikeman (7.13), sophomore Ryan Obear (7.15), freshman Mykease Driggers (7.22) and junior Tommy Mottl (7.39).

In the 300 meter, junior Brian Smith (38.06) took first place and 7th overall in the league. Senior Jared Hurley (39.90) picked up a 3rd place finish while freshman Tucker Stikeman finished 4th at 40.54.

In the shot put, senior Pat Redmond continued his impressive season with another Middlesex League first-place throw of 46’1, almost two feet further than the 2nd-place finisher from Woburn, Padraic Murphy (44’11). Senior Alex Joly took 2nd with a toss of 42’3.

Sophomore Trevor Zupan crossed the line in 1:32.49 for 1st place in the 600 meter. Wakefield also took 2nd (junior Nick Connor at 1:33.07), 3rd (senior Ryan Ritchie at 1:34.60) and 4th (senior Ryan Smith at 1:35.37).

The Warriors took 1st through 3rd In the 1,000 meter, with senior Tommy Lucey finished 1st and 4th overall at 2:44.32. Junior Rohan Singhvi took 2nd (2:50.52) and sophomore Matt Roberto nabbed 3rd (2:52.45).

In the 55 meter hurdles, senior Sam Morey finished 1st (8.97), senior Jordan Fauci took 3rd (9.67) and sophomore Eli Gosslin-Smoske, 4th at 9.93.

Junior Thomas Galvin (5’7) took first in the high jump followed by senior Marc Biennestin (5’5).

Wakefield and Watertown split the two relay races, with the Raiders taking the 4×200 at 1:36.29.

The Warriors won the 4×400 with a time of 3:43.70. The team consisted of Connor, Zupan, Riley Brackett and Brian Smith.

Wakefield will play Stoneham at Boston University this Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 4:30 p.m. for a chance to go undefeated in the Freedom Division. Stoneham is 2-2 against the Freedom with wins over Melrose and Watertown and losses against Wilmington and Burlington.
