Wakefield Main Streets: Revitalizing Downtown Together

WAKEFIELD – When Leanne Wheeler decided to open Caryn’s Sports Bar & Restaurant in downtown Wakefield, she was taking the next step in a career in the food and beverage industry that began in 2005.

And taking that step in Wakefield was an easy one after she first came to town in 2014 and fell in love with loyalty of its residents and the strong sense of community.

“In the short time I was here before I decided to open the neighborhood sports bar restaurant, I knew that Wakefield was the place I wanted to be,” Leanne said. “I was impressed by strong community-vibe and how loyal the residents are to their town.”

Leanne’s love of meeting people and interacting with customers was what encouraged her to become involved in the food service industry. Opening Caryn’s Sports Bar & Restaurant at 397A Main St. was just a natural progression along that career path.

“I love working with, and meeting, great people, and I am so happy that the community has embraced our sports bar and restaurant,” she added. “We’ve met so many new friends since we opened in May. I am so thankful to everyone for their encouragement and support.”

When asked what she wants those who have not yet visited Caryn’s Sports Bar & Restaurant to know about the establishment, Leanne said she wants them to know about the all-around quality of the food and drinks she serves. In fact, many of her employees, including kitchen manager Don Doward, the heart of the restaurant, were formerly associated with the renowned Hilltop Restaurant.

“I want everyone to know that Caryn’s is a great place, not only for good drinks and a fun atmosphere, but also as a fabulous place for lunch and dinner.”

Caryn’s décor was recently revamped, with warm tones and memorabilia added to the walls, as well as a number of customer-oriented additions, including a revised menu, live music on Friday and Saturday nights, karaoke on Tuesday nights, and a ping pong table, a dart board and PS4 Pro in the back room which can also be reserved, free-of-charge, for private parties.

“We’re excited about the latest additions and encourage everyone to come down for some excellent food prepared by our seasoned staff,” Leanne added. “They’re sure to love our new look, our food and the great activities we have planned for those who love karaoke and those who enjoy hearing live music in a fun, casual atmosphere.”

To add to the comfortable atmosphere and environment, Caryn’s Sports Bar & Restaurant has 10 big screen TV’s for all to enjoy throughout the restaurant.

Since opening the restaurant on May 11, 2016, Leanne has had an opportunity to experience the downtown’s good points as well as those that need improvement.

While echoing her fellow business owners’ sentiments about wanting a better downtown and business area, she is also encouraged by the positive attitude of town leaders and organizations like Wakefield Main Streets, Inc.

“Of course I’d like to see a parking garage and sidewalk maintenance, but the good points far outweigh the bad.”

Encouraging food service businesses like Caryn’s Sports Bar & Restaurant, as well as retail establishments that line the streets of downtown Wakefield and beyond, is one of the main focuses of Wakefield Main Streets, Inc.
