Senior crowned the 195 champ for the second straight year, Warriors have four total place winners

WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Memorial High wrestling team crowned one champion and had three other place winners in the 15th annual Anthony Lisitano Memorial Tournament which was held Saturday at the Charbonneau Field House.

It also marked the first time this season the Warriors competed at home.

Senior tri-captain Dan Wensley was crowned the 195 champion. Senior tri-captain Alex Kane captured second at the 220 weight class and sophomore Jack Spicer and senior Nick Murphy both secured fifth place finishes at the 106 and 285 weight classes.

Wakefield also had some good performances across the board as its “A” team finished 10th overall with 92 points. Wakefield also fielded a “B” team which finished in 16th place with nine points.

Catholic Memorial won the tournament with 219.5 points, while Methuen was second with 188 points and Arlington was third with 164 points.

Reading was fourth with 146.5 points and Lynnfield/North Reading was fifth with 145 points.

Greater Lawrence (109 points), Malden Catholic (107 points), Lincoln-Sudbury (96 points) and Lexington (96 points) secured sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth place.

Taking 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th were Watertown (75 points), Malden (61 points), Georgetown/Ipswich (50 points), Marblehead/Swampscott (37 points) and Pentucket (24 points).

At 195, Wensley posted a 4-0 record and won three of the four matches by pin.

Wensley pinned Greater Lawrence’s Christian Tejada at 41 seconds. The senior then won by fall against Lincoln-Sudbury’s Troy Shallow at 4:44. Wensley then pinned Catholic Memorial’s Chinaka Ekechukwu at 1:27.

In the final, Wensley won by major decision (12-0) over Methuen’s Saul Cabrera to win the title.

At 220, Kane was second overall, while at 106 and 285, Spicer and Murphy both came away with fifth place finishes. Murphy posted a 3-2 record for his fifth place performance.

Wakefield had one or two wrestlers in all the weight classes and there were some highlights for the Warriors.

At 113, sophomore Jake Allen went 0-2.

Shannon Drager, a junior, and Connor Shine, a senior, both posted 1-2 records at the 120 and 126 weight classes.

Wakefield had two freshmen competing at the 132 weight class. Ryan Smith and Jake Goodchild recorded 1-2 records.

At 145, sophomore Ben Piercy won one match and went 1-2.

Evan Gourville, a junior, went 0-2 at the 152 weight class. However, sophomore Joe Marrinaccio had a 1-2 record. Marrinaccio’s victory was his first varsity win and it came against Marblehead/Swampscott’s Ben Warren by fall at 1:36.

At 160, both senior Dan Bertini and sophomore Matt Murdocca had 0-2 records.

Freshman Steve Mercurio competed at 170 and posted an 0-2 mark.

Rob Nohelty, a first year senior, earned his first varsity win as he defeated Marblehead/Swampscott’s Iassac Janock by fall at 36 seconds. Nohelty went on and posted a 1-2 record.

Also competing at the 195 weight class was senior David Piracini. Piracini recorded two victories and had a 2-2 record.

Wakefield’s second competitor at 220 was Dan DiMeglio, a sophomore. DiMeglio went 0-2.

Sophomore Anthony Denham wrestled at 285 and went 0-2.

Wakefield is off until this coming weekend when it competes at the Lowell Holiday Tournament at Lowell High School. Saturday’s competition begins at 10 a.m. and Sunday’s competition begins at 9 a.m.
