WMHS grad, son of former Wakefield Item managing editor, served in U.S. Army during Cold War

CONWAY, S.C. — David W. Reed, son of Robert G. Reed of West Newbury and the late Marion C. Reed, formerly of Wakefield, died last Thursday in a nursing home in Conway, S.C., where he had been confined for the last two years with complications of diabetes and paralysis. He resided in Wakefield in his youth and was a graduate of Wakefield Memorial High School, Class of 1959.
Mr. Reed was a graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, from which he earned a commission in the ROTC and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during which in the Cold War years he commanded a tank platoon on the East-West German border facing USSR troops. While in high school Mr. Reed was a member of the Honor Society, captain of the basketball team and catcher on the baseball team and class president in his junior year. In his senior year he was awarded The Harvard Book, an honorary presentation by Harvard University to the boy or girl voted the outstanding student in the class by the administration, faculty and classmates. He was born in Milford, Conn. in 1941.
Mr. Reed is survived by his father, former managing editor of the Daily Item; niece Susan O’Neill of West Peabody, two daughters and a son and six grandchildren, all of Columbia, S.C.
Funeral services will be private.
