NOKOMIS, Fla. — Charles Sumner Howard, M.D., 91, of Drakes Island, Maine and Nokomis, Fla., died Saturday, March 12.

He was born to the late Clifton Merton Howard and Ruth Henderson Howard Sept. 10, 1924 in Milton. He graduated from Milton High School; Brown University; Tufts University Medical School and Harvard University Residency program at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital of Boston.

He was married to Irma Gass Dec. 18, 1946.

Charles lived in Wakefield where he served many years as chief of the Department of Anesthesia at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and also as president of the medical staff. One of his interests was the development of innovative methods for the delivery of anesthesia.

Charles was a member of South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport, Maine. He was a Descendant of the Mayflower and member of the River Club, Kennebunkport, and the Arundel Golf Club of Kennebunk, Maine.

Charles is survived by his wife of 69 years, Irma G. Howard; two children Dr. Douglas Robert Howard of Wakefield, and Cynthia Howard Mulcahy of Marshfield. He is also survived by four grandchildren Caleb, Brendan, Kathryn and Sarah and six great-grandchildren.
