MELROSE — Edward M. Smith, 94, of Melrose, died in Stoneham on Sept. 28.

Ed was born and raised in Medford and was a graduate of Medford Vocational High School. He served his country during World War II as a Navy Aviation Ordnanceman. After returning from the war, Ed worked as a printer for the Murray Printing Company in Westford for over 40 years, working his way up to vice president and general manager before his retirement.

He enjoyed reading and traveling with his wife Ruth to Cape Cod and Bermuda. Ed loved to play golf and was a member of the Andover Country Club for many years and would travel to Seaview, N.J. for his annual golf tournament.

He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth E. (O’Donnell) Smith for 66 years. He was the loving father of Eileen R. Mulgrew and her husband Paul of Malden, Jeannie M. Smith of Beverly, Edward J. Smith and his wife Marie of New Hampshire and Joseph J. Smith and his wife Lisa of West Peabody. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose on Monday, Oct. 3, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church, Herbert Street, Melrose at 10 a.m.

Burial in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
