MELROSE — With the city’s 2015 election season just over a month old, an aldermanic race is forming in Ward 5, where incumbent Gail Infurna is being challenged — for now — by West Wyoming Avenue resident Marika McKnight.

McKnight pulled nomination papers for the Ward 5 seat on May 22. Six days later, Infurna did the same, an unofficial announcement that she’s running for reelection.

Mayor Robert J. Dolan is also a candidate for reelection this year, having taken out nomination papers May 1, the first day office hopefuls were able to do so. The mayor is pushing for a Proposition 2 1/2 override to hire more teachers and police, a move that may seem politically dangerous. As of last week, the mayor did not have a challenger.

Michael Zwirko, 100 Derby Rd., has already announced his intentions to run for one of the four two year alderman-at-large terms up for election November 3.

Ward 2’s Jennifer Lemmerman of Bay State Road took out nomination papers for reelection May 8.

Robert Boisselle, the longtime alderman in Ward 4, took out nomination papers May 4.

Peter Mortimer, Ward 6’s representative on the Board of Aldermen, pulled his nomination papers for reelection May 1.

In addition to the mayor and all aldermen positions up for election in November, three School Committee seats are too. On May 26, Tappan Street’s Jaime McAllister-Grande took out papers for election to the school board.

Nomination papers may be obtained only by a candidate or a person presenting a signed authorization for a candidate. Prior to obtaining nomination papers, each candidate must file a statement containing his/her name and address and the office for which he/she intends to run, with the Election Office in City Hall.

The last day to obtain nomination papers for mayoral candidates is Friday, July 10, and the last day to obtain for all others will be Friday, Sept. 11.

Candidates for alderman-at-large and School Committee will need 120 signatures and a ward alderman candidate will need 20 signatures in order to be placed on the ballot.
