WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Memorial High field hockey team gave an impressive performance on Friday, defeating visiting Stoneham by a 7-3 tally at Beasley Field.

The win came despite Stoneham jumping to an early 1-0 lead when Jackie Flynn scored just minutes into the game.

“It was quite surprising. It was about a minute into the game when they scored and they caught us off guard. But we came right back,” said Wakefield coach Cara Luca.

Indeed, Wakefield came storming right back. After Julianne Bourque and Jill Cataldo put pressure on Stoneham, Bourque scored consecutive goals just seconds apart to give Wakefield a 2-1 lead.

“This team doesn’t give up. They haven’t given up. Usually, if we’re falling behind, the second half is phenomenal for them. This time around both halves, we could play,” noted Luca.

It wasn’t long after Bourque’s second goal that Vanessa Kaddaras scored to put Wakefield up 3-1 and Kaddaras scored again to make it 4-1.

Bourque scored one more goal midway through the first half to make it 5-1, where it stood at the end of the first half.

Wakefield had been able to take advantage of a number of corners that it was awarded early in the game, with at least two goals coming as a result of the corners.

“Those two corner goals were sweet. We’ve been working on corners all week like we always do. I let the girls work on them by themselves today. The aerial corner and the shot directly on the corners was good, too,” Luca explained.

The second half saw Wakefield increase its lead to 7-1 with goals from Cataldo and Kaddaras.

Stoneham managed to score goals courtesy of Michaela Gearin and Emily Whooley to make it 7-3, where it would stand.

“Defensively, we had a little snafu but we came together,” said Luca.

The Warriors, who have won two in a row and are 2-2 on the season, will face Wilmington tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Wilmington High School.
