WAKEFIELD — It was a close call for a business and a homeowner Wednesday when fires broke out in their buildings.

Fire Chief Michael Sullivan said that fire coming from a gas heating unit on the roof at Brother’s Restaurant and Deli, 404 Main St., caused smoke and water damage to the kitchen area of the restaurant. The incident was reported at 5:20 p.m.

All patrons and employees were evacuated and the restaurant was closed for the remainder of the night, though the fire was contained to the heating unit and was extinguished quickly.

Sullivan said the cause of the fire was found to be in the heating unit itself when an unknown object may have broken off a piece of it.

There were no injuries.

Another fire was reported yesterday at 2:10 p.m. at 246 Salem St.

A resident of the four-unit building called 911 after a fire was accidentally started in the basement. Sullivan said the resident had been using a torch to thaw frozen pipes.

“We checked for an extension of the fire but did not find any further evidence,” he said. No one was displaced due to the fire.

Both fires were overseen by Capt. Richard Smith.

Fire crews spent about one hour at each location.

Altogether, the Fire Department responded to 14 calls yesterday, five for medical aid.

Two calls were from homeowners who reported ice dams.

Another caller reported a water main break at 4:10 p.m. at the intersection of Avon Street and North Avenue. The Water Department and Department of Public Works responded. Firefighters found water pouring into the street.

Police responded to a number of calls yesterday concerning parking and snow-related complaints and several larcenies.

Parking complaints started coming in to the Police Station just after 9 a.m. from an Albion Street resident followed by a similar complaint from a Murray Street resident. Police issued tickets to people parked in the St. Joseph Church lot without permission. On Murray Street, police determined cars were legally parked.

Another caller notified police at about 4 p.m. that a car was blocking his Gould Street driveway, but police said the complaint was unfounded.

Another vehicle was moved from Dexter Lane at about 5 p.m. following a complaint about the car being in a hazardous spot.

At 7:10 p.m. police got a complaint about a vehicle blocking a fire hydrant. A ticket was issued.

Two larcenies were reported yesterday. The first concerned a lost or stolen iPhone while the owner was in the Square. The incident was reported at about 10 a.m.

An employee at the nursing home on Bathol Street said there was a possible $20 theft from a patient at 2 p.m. Police are looking into the matter, which may or may not be founded.

Both calls were handled by Patrol Officer Gerald Holleran.
