NORTH READING — The North Reading High baseball team had five Cape Ann League All-Stars selected for the 2023 season.
The Hornets had two First Team All-Stars – seniors Alex Carucci and Ryan McGuire –and three Second Team All-Stars – seniors Zach Rosatone and Aldo Vittozzi along with freshman Dylan Matthews.
“All five of these guys had tremendous seasons for us but it didn’t come as a surprise,” said head coach Eric Archambault. “They all worked incredibly hard in the offseason and earned their spots on the All-Star teams.”
McGuire tied for the team lead in hits with 22 and had a .319 average. He had a team-high 33 stolen bases and 24 runs scored.
Carucci had 19 hits, a .275 average, 15 RBI, 19 stolen bases and 23 runs scored.
Vittozzi had a team-high batting average of .361 and on-base percentage of .467 to go with 22 hits, 19 stolen bases, 21 runs scored and a team-high 18 RBI.
Rosatone had 21 hits, a .333 average, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored.
Matthews pitched a team-high 42.2 innings during his freshman season. His earned run average of just 1.64 was also tops for the Hornets as was his 33 strikeouts. He went 5-2 on the season and surrendered just 10 earned runs and 10 walks in those 42.2 frames.
“For the four seniors, this caps off a tremendous baseball career in North Reading and for Dylan to make it as a freshman is quite rare and a very impressive accomplishment,” said Archambault.
The Hornets went 15-5 in the regular season, earning a share of the CAL Kinney Division title. They earned the No. 19 seed in the Div. 3 state tournament and beat No. 14 Greater New Bedford on the road in the first round 9-2 before falling to No. 3 Bishop Stang 2-0 in the Round of 16.
