WAKEFIELD — Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 20, to get an opportunity to purchase prized perennials from the gardens of members of the Wakefield Garden Club (WGC) and in doing so enable members to contribute to enhancing the beauty of sites such as “Welcome to Wakefield” sign.

The Floral Way Festival takes place at the historic Hartshorne House from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members have been busy digging up their beloved plants for sale and eager to share their garden tips for the successful planting.

Co-president Cheryl Krasker commented, “This is truly an event that we get participation from all of our membership in some form of another. Whether it is making calls, distributing flyers or setting up tents, our members know that everyone is needed to make this work.”

MaryAnne Carmody further commented that “without the donations from this sale, we could not have the programs that help educate and inspire the work that WGC for 87 years is known to do around town from beautification of gardens, participating in the Annual Open House at the Hatrshorne House or scholarship.”

To add extra punch to your garden, colorful annuals supplied by a local nursery, The Willow Tree, will be available for sale. Hanging geraniums and new guinea impatiens are among the best sellers. Fillers such as sweet potato vines or vinca will enhance a window box or planter. Herbs and small vegetable plants are waiting for the natural gardener.

The Harshorne House will be opened for viewing to those who stop by even to just to have a spot of tea and weather permitting sit on the back patio to view the perennial herb garden. The first floor will be embellished by various floral arrangements that WGC members will have mustered about. The kitchen is where the culinary talents of members will show off. Goodies of all kinds will be available for tasting.

When you get through feasting your eyes or savor your taste buds, wander to the Green Elephant Table where hidden garden treasurers can be found at remarkable discounted prices. An opportunity to find that special planter or basket, a book that inspires your green thumb or a garden tool that you can’t live without. One never knows what opportunity awaits.

And of course, the members’ cookbook and garden gloves will have its impact on the fundraiser. At this station, participate in the Opportunity Drawing. This year, items include a hanging plant, a hand painted garden chair with a plant and a gift certificate to name a few.
