Clash of unbeatens will decide season

MELROSE—It’s a clash of titans between two undefeated teams as the Melrose Red Raider football team goes for broke against undefeated Marblehead tonight at Fred Green Field in Melrose. The game represents Melrose’s last home game before Thanksgiving and the winner will advance to face the South Champion (winner of Hopkinton/Milton) on the weekend of Nov. 17 to fight for an appearance at the Div. 3 Super Bowl on Dec. 2 at Gillette Stadium.

Melrose (9-0) comes into the game as the #1 seed, while #2 Marblehead comes off a Super Bowl appearance last year (a loss to Falmouth). These well-coached, skilled teams have plenty of post season experience so fans should expect an exciting and competitive game.

Marblehead brigs to the field a tough QB in Andy Clough, a 6’6 former running back who who has nine touchdowns on the year and will pose a challenge for Melrose’s well respected line. Other play makers including wide receiver Derek Marino (7 touchdowns), running back Tim Cronin and a strong kicking game. While Marblehead will certainly pose a strong challenge, Marblehead defense nearly squandered a 24 point lead over Wilmington last week and appeared overwhelmed by a spread formation.

Melrose, meanwhile is a team who responds when backs are up against the wall. It will be important to score early and limit Andy Clough’s movement on the field. The Red Raiders will also need to rely on more than just Isaac Seide, who the Magicians will swarm with coverage. Fortunately, Melrose’s quarterbacks Charlie Stanton and Jack Sullivan are coming off some of their best work of the season and have always-capable receivers like Mike Fennell and Gabe Nyland to throw to. Add a very solid defense, and the Red Raiders will be a handful for the Magicians.

Bottom line: The edge for Melrose might be their overall depth and a home advantage.

Prediction: Melrose, 21 Marblehead 14.
