MELROSE — It all starts today. On Friday, Sept. 11 the Division 3 North champion Melrose Red Raider football team returns to the turf at Fred Green Field for the first time since last season’s Div. 3 Northwest playoff opener.

That game ended in a 24-0 rout against Wakefield. What happened after won’t soon be forgotten. Melrose (9-2) went on to edge Woburn, beat Concord Carlisle and shock Tewksbury to bring Melrose to Gillette Stadium for its first Super Bowl appearance in over 30 years.

That game ended in a 14-7 loss against Dartmouth but the Div. 3 North champs return with targets on their backs, particularly from Masconomet, whom they host tonight, Friday, Sept. 11 at Fred Green Field in Melrose. The Raiders have plenty of motivation to beat the Chieftains, who edged Melrose in last year’s opener 15-13 in overtime.

Melrose has lost a few key members on offense but can be expected to be strong defensively. Masco lost several key components from last season but return well-sized and with such playmakers as Angus McNeil (6’5 running back) and Scott Foden (running back). Junior Declan Judge will return in quarterback duties.

This is the third time Melrose has opened the season against the Chieftains. No doubt for Tim Morris’ Raiders, they are hoping third time is a charm. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

NEW TICKET INFORMATION: For the first time in 20 years, the Middlesex League has raised game admission prices. Beginning Sept. 1, 2015 prices will be $5 for Students and Senior Citizens and $7 for Adults. At the Thanksgiving Day game, pre-sale tickets will be the same as previously stated. However, all game tickets will be $10. Melrose High thanks you for your support.
