Served in U.S. Air Force during Korean War

Gardner-obit-webMELROSE — Giles A. Gardner, 87, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 6 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

Giles was born in Stoneham, one of three sons of the late Andrew H. and Christine (Miller) Gardner. He was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1947. On Sept. 22, 1951, he married Joan Batchelder ,who was a fellow MHS ’47 graduate. After serving his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Giles and Joan settled in Melrose to raise two children.

Mr. Gardner enjoyed his 27 years of service as a letter carrier for the Lynnfield Post Office. A sociable man, Giles became a part of the community and came to know many of the residents along his route. Any extra time he had throughout the day, he spent talking to people and developing relationships that brought him much joy.

Mr. Gardner loved sports, in particular skiing, ice skating, tennis and simply taking a walk outside. He enjoyed watching the Boston sports teams, especially the Bruins and Patriots. In the summer months, he enjoyed time with family and friends in Camden, Maine.

Above all else, Giles was devoted to his family. His unconditional love and positive, good natured presence will be missed but always remembered by his family.

Giles was the beloved husband of Joan (Batchelder) Gardner, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Jay W. Gardner and Jane Gardner, both of Melrose. He was the dear brother of Oliver Gardner and his wife Vicki of Florida and the late A. Harvey Gardner. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Giles memory may be made to the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, Fund Development Dept., 585 Lebanon St., Melrose MA 02176. The doctors, nurses and staff made Giles’ last days and hours as pleasant and positive as anyone possibly could.
