whatever reason, the Wakefield Memorial High girls’ cross country team saw a stronger Wilmington squad on its home course.

Still, the Warriors took care of business by winning the dual meet by a 20-38 score to remain undefeated in the Middlesex League Freedom division. Wakefield is 2-1 overall.

“They looked stronger than Saturday. (Elisabeth) Olson from Wilmington pulled away in the last 800 meters to get the first place,” said Coach Karen Barrett. “(Sara) Custodio and (Gillian) Russell fought her the whole way.”

Olson posted a winning time of 20:54. Custodio was second in a time of 21:01. Russell ran her best race of the season getting third overall with a time of 21:08.

Juniors Jordan Stackhouse, Abby Harrington and Cassie Lucci were next all running very steadily. They secured fourth, fifth and sixth overall with times of 21:24, 21:46 and 22:38.

Wilmington took seventh before freshman Amanda Westlake, senior co-captain Reilly McNamara, freshman Isabella Kehoe and senior Catherine Urbano were next. They claimed eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th place as they posted times of 23:21, 23:54, 23:57 and 24:30.

Kehoe ran her best race of the season said Barrett.

Also competing for Wakefield were Sam Ross (25:04), Emmalee Connors (26:00), Emily Norton-Hughes (27:18), Kate Lynch (27:32) and Nicole Lima (29:55).

“I was happy with the race today (Tuesday). The girls seemed very focused,” said Barrett. “We still need to work on closing that gap between our first and fifth runner. We will be working very hard this week for our next race against Melrose.”

The Warriors take on the Red Raiders on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Park Course.
