SAUGUS — The members of the Wakefield Memorial High girls’ hockey team have been on the losing end of several one-sided games this season. That’s why the Warriors had to be very happy when they skated off on Saturday afternoon after posting a lopsided 9-2 victory over Belmont at the Kasabuski Arena.

Wakefield scored six goals in the first period to have a comfortable 6-2 lead at the first intermission. After there was no scoring in the second period, Wakefield added three more goals in the third for its second victory of the season.

The Warriors are now 2-9-0 overall on the season and 2-8-0 in the Middlesex League Freedom division.

Wakefield’s other win this season came in a 4-3 nail-biter against Wilmington. So this one wasn’t quite as dramatic.

“We’ve been there,” said coach Jack Foley. “The girls have turned in a good effort and have been working hard. It was nice win. It is a good confidence builder for us.”

Senior captain and forward Julianne Bourque led the way with four goals and two assists, while freshman Brooke Lilley tallied three goals and assisted two others.

Sophomores Olivia Cameron, a forward, and Courtney Hill, a defenseman, each scored a goal as well.

Bourque scored the first two goals of the game at 50 seconds and 2:44. The first goal was unassisted, while Lilley and senior defenseman Gabrielle Nadolny assisted on the second goal.

Belmont got a goal at 3:46 to cut the lead to 2-1. Sophomore Emma Brodigan found the back of the net with senior defenseman Serena Nally and freshman forward Kelsey Hanley assisted on the goal.

But the Warriors scored the next four goals at 5:29, 7:35, 11:41, and 12:06, with the latter being a power play goal. Lilley, Bourque, Lilley, and Cameron scored the goals. Bourque and freshman forward Fiona Heffernan assisted on a goal, eighth grade forward Annabella Forziati and Lilley assisted on a goal, Bourque assisted on a goal, and eighth grade defenseman Hope Melanson and senior forward Meaghan Kerrigan assisted on the final Warrior goal of the frame.

The Marauders tallied their second goal at 13:29 to the lead to 6-2. Nally scored with sophomore forward Rachel Iler-Keniston getting the assist.

There were no goals netted in the second period and Wakefield added three more scores in the final period.

Lilley got the hat trick with her third goal 5:59 with eighth grade defenseman Carestin Stewart earning the assist.

Hill then scored an unassisted goal at 11:37.

The final goal was scored by Bourque unassisted at 13:39 to make the final score 9-2.

“Belmont kept working hard and outshot us,” said Foley. “We were able to put the puck in the net. It was a nice win.”

Wakefield hosts Woburn on Wednesday at 3:40 p.m. at the Kasabuski Arena.
