MELROSE—The Melrose Lady Raider lacrosse team has gotten used to being a playoff staple in recent years. Last year, they enjoyed a deep playoff run with a 13-6 record, and this season they hope to repeat that when they hit the turf of Fred Green Field. They begin their season on Tuesday against Lynnfield, and open at home on Thursday, April 6 against Belmont.

Overall, Melrose boasts a team with a healthy blend of both youth and experience. Leading the team as captains this year are Julia Symonds and Shannon Jones, players who have helped coach Cate Arkins reach playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Melrose also returns several other familiar faces including Rachel DiFraia, Jill Mercer, Lauren Pedrini, Abby Cunningham, Lily Cunningham and Linnea Kelley. This core group will help Melrose make a transition on the field on defense and offense. Melrose lost some power attackers last season (and a goalie) but can rely on scoring from Abby and Lily Cunningham, who had very solid seasons in 2016.

Arkins also expects a large role from DiFraia on the field, along with newcomer Olivia Ingemi, a player who brings tons of lacrosse IQ. “She’s been a wonderful fit and is encouraging on the field, especially to our younger players,” Arkins says.

Younger players have also impressed in the early season. “We have several freshmen that have shown great improvement in stick skills and a great work ethic,” says the coach.

At goalie, look for Linnea Kelley to hold the fort. “She had a great end to the season last year and is a very talented athlete who works hard.” She will likely be assisted in the net by Mairead Clark, last year’s strong JV goalie.

Last season, Melrose fell to Ipswich in semifinals, but overall, enjoyed their best season to date. This year, look for teams such as Watertown and Wakefield to battle with Melrose for league bragging rights.

And while Mother Nature isn’t helping matters, the Lady Raiders are one team who already been outside, rain or shine, preparing for a long season ahead.

“We’re a very athletic team, quick, and the team chemistry is great,” says the coach. “I expect a good year.”
