Fall to Unbeaten Pioneers

In a matchup of unbeatens the Lynnfield Pioneers ended the Hornets quest for a perfect season with their 4-1 victory on May 11. Sophomore Aly Budny and freshman Tia Campagna suffered their first defeats of the season.

The lone bright spot came at second doubles. Senior captain Jenny Crotty and freshman Meghan Griffin remained undefeated with their straight set victory 6-4, 7-6. Senior captains Kaylin Scher and Meg Carlo were beaten at first doubles 4-6, 5-7.

First and seconds singles lost quickly by identical scores 0-6 1-6. Sophomore Marissa Galuppo lost at first singles and Budny fell at second. At third singles Campagna battled but was defeated in straight sets 5-7, 2-6.

Trample Tigers 5-0

The Hornets responded to their first loss of the season with a 5-0 drubbing of the Ipswich Tigers on May 13. It is North Reading’s seventh match sweep of the season.

At first singles Marissa Galuppo won the first set easily 6-0 but had to eke out the second set 7-6 to win the match. At second singles Aly Budny returned to her winning ways with her straight set victory 6-3, 6-3. Kaylin Scher moved up to third singles and cruised 6-1, 6-0.

Jenny Crotty and Meghan Griffin played at first doubles and took care of business 6-2, 6-3. At second doubles Tia Campagna and sophomore Emily Zhang teamed up for the first time all season and won 6-1, 6-2.

Finish season 14–1

The girls ended their season by beating Hamilton–Wenham on Monday to end the season 14–1 and qualify for the state tournament. The girls now await their playoff draw.
