Warriors post 86-50 triumph

WILMINGTON — The Warrior girls’ track team remained undefeated on the dual meet season as it denied a good Wilmington team yesterday afternoon in a Middlesex League Freedom division clash at Wilmington High School by an 86-50 score.

Wakefield is now 3-0 on the spring.

“It was a great win for us against Wilmington today,” said Coach Karen Barrett. “They beat Melrose and Stoneham so we knew it would be tough. The girls have been working hard and it paid off.”

Abby Harrington, a sophomore, started it off with a win in the 400 hurdles running a time of 69.9 seconds, qualifying her for states. Senior Nicole Galli ran a great race and was second with a time of 74.5 seconds.

Sara Custodio, a junior, had her best race of the season winning the mile with a time of 5:42. Jill Raso, a senior, secured a third with a time of 6:07.

Raso got a win in the high jump with a personal best of 4-10.  Freshman Allee Purcell and sophomore Brigid Scanlon took second and third for the sweep. They jumped 4-5 and 4-3.

Jill Cataldo, a junior, and Harrington were second and third in the long jump with distances of 14-2 and a 13-8.

In the triple jump, junior Sam Ross had her best jump of the season winning the event with a 34-1. Sarah Buckley, a junior, was third with a 31-10.

Sam Nimblett, a freshman, got Wakefield’s only points in the shot put throwing a personal best of 25-6 and getting a third.

In the javelin, junior Julia Derendal took first place with a distance of 89-6 followed by sophomore Alex Rollins with a second place throw of 83-1.

Rollins was first in the discus with Derendal finishing third.

Back on the track, Buckley and junior Avery Parece were second and third in the 100 hurdles running times of 17.3 seconds and 18.1 seconds. That was Parece’s personal best.

In the 100 meter dash, Ross and freshman Anna Lucas were second and third with times of 13.7 seconds and 14.0 seconds.

Senior Emily Hammond and sophomore Cassie Lucci were second and third in the 800 meter run. Hammond clocked in at 2:25 and Lucci ran a personal best time of 2:38.

In the 200 meter dash, Ross and freshman Hailey Lovell were first and third with times of 27.7 seconds and 28.8 seconds.

Raso and Purcell were first and third in the 400 meter run with a time of 64.2 seconds and a 64.9 seconds.

The Warriors swept the two mile with senior Shannon Quirk running a 12:10, freshman Gillian Russell clocking in at 13:02, and junior Meaghan Hudson posting a time of 13:55.

Wakefield lost the 4×100 relay, but won the 4×400 relay with Hammond, Harrington, Lucci and Purcell being the four runners in the event.

“We will now go to the freshman/sophomore meet Saturday morning and the Twilight Meet Saturday night,” said Barrett.

The Middlesex League Freshman/Sophomore Meet will be run on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Woburn High School and the Twilight Meet will be begin at 4 p.m. at Weston High School.

The Warriors’ next dual meet is Tuesday, May 5 at 3:30 p.m. at Pine Banks Track.
