Wakefield played its two best matches of the year.

The Warriors swept a tri-match against Arlington and Woburn as they edged the Spy Ponders, 36.5-35.5, and defeated the Tanners, 38.5-33.5. As a result of the two victories, Wakefield clinched a Div. 2 North tournament berth for the third straight year.

Wakefield is now 8-4 overall and 5-4 in the Middlesex League Freedom division. The Warriors are also in the postseason for the fourth time in six years.

“We played our finest two matches of the season. Both matches went back and forth,” said Coach Dennis Bisso. “The team did a wonderful job. All three teams worked hard and played well yesterday at the Thomson Country Club.”

Arlington Match

Wakefield won five of the eight matches and halved one. Even one of the losses was by a close score. As it turned out, the Warriors needed every point they could get against an improved Arlington squad.

At number one, junior David Melanson pulled out a 5-4 victory.

Mike Guanci, a junior, halved his match, 4.5-4.5.

Dylan Melanson, a senior co-captain, and Tim Hurley, a junior, both edged out their foes at three and four by identical 5-4 scores.

At five, junior Austin Collard dropped a 6.5-2.5 decision.

Senior co-captain Steve Melanson came up with a big victory at number six as he prevailed, 5.5-3.5.

At seven, Kevin Murray, a senior, suffered a 6-3 setback.

Stephen Marino, a senior, won his match at the eight spot by a 6-3 score as Wakefield prevailed by a mere point.

The two alternate matches at nine and 10 were halved, 4.5-4.5. Sophomore John Evangelista played at nine and junior Justin Sullivan competed at 10.

Woburn Match

The Warriors took five of the eight matches against Woburn as well and also halved one contest. The final margin was a little more in Wakefield’s favor.

At number one, David Melanson was edged 5-4, but at two, Guanci earned a 5-4 triumph.

Dylan Melanson also defeated his Tanner opponent by a 5-4 tally at third position, but Hurley halved his match against Woburn, 4.5-4.5, at four.

Instead of a four point loss at five, Collard came up with a clutch victory against Woburn in the fifth spot. Collard pulled out a 5.5-3.5 victory.

At six, Steven Melanson won by a 5-4 margin.

Murray got a victory at number seven to earn a split for the day. Murray prevailed, 5.5-3.5.

In the eighth spot, Marino was edged, 5-4. But he hung tough and earned four points for the Warriors.

“We had two great wins,” said Bisso. “This qualifies us for the tournament.”

Like the Arlington contest, Evangelista and Sullivan played at nine and 10 and both halved their matches.

Wakefield heads out on the course again today at 3:30 p.m. as it take on Stoneham at the Bear Hill Golf Course.
