MELROSE — Sometimes just being able to fill all the weight classes with a competitor can make all the difference in the outcome of a meet.

The Wakefield Memorial High wrestling team accepted three forfeits at the three lightweights and that pretty much wound up being the margin of victory for the Warriors as they posted a 44-30 triumph over Melrose last night in the Middlesex League Freedom division opener at the Marcoux Gymnasium.

The Warriors are now 8-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the league with the win.

Wakefield received 18 points to start off the meet as Melrose forfeited at 106, 113 and 120. However in the weight classes contested, the Red Raiders went 6-5 which made for a pretty even meet if only 11 weight classes were counted.

But freshman Aidan Armstrong, junior Jack Spicer and junior Jake Allen each received six points at 106, 113 and 120.

At 126, senior Evan McGuire was pinned by Steve McIntosh at 4:17.

Jake Goodchild, a sophomore, prevailed by pin over Bobby Voutsinas at 1:57 of the 132 bout.

Melrose scored two victories by decision at the 138 and 152 weight classes. In between, the Warriors won by decision at 145.

At 138, Ryan Smith, a sophomore, dropped an 11-4 decision to Mandip Singh. At 152, Ben Piercy, a junior, dropped a 9-5 decision to Cam Roside.

Wakefield earned three points at 145 as junior Matt Murdocca pulled out a 7-5 victory over Mike Calvert.

The Warriors won the 160 and 170 weight classes to add 11 more points to their total.

At 160, Joe Marinaccio, a junior, pinned Josh Roderick at 39 seconds. At 170, senior Evan Gourville prevailed by technical fall (21-4) over Jacob Harvey.

The Red Raiders then won the next three weight classes, all by pin for their final 18 points of the meet.

Mike Yirrell, a freshman, was pinned by Pat Whelan at 3:07 of the 182 weight class. At 195, freshman Derek DiMascio was taken down by Antonio Difronzo at 1:40. Sophomore Aiden Coleman was defeated by Colin Casey at 4:30 of the 220 bout.

In the final match at 285, senior Mike Lima pinned Jake Fortier at 4:52.

Wakefield will get ready for a quad-meet on Saturday at 9 a.m. against Reading, Shawsheen Tech and Greater Lawrence at Shawsheen Tech in Billerica.
