NORTH READING — The 3rd Annual North Reading Tennis Open took place this past weekend at North Reading High to help raise funds for the Hornet boys’ and girls’ tennis programs.

“It was a wonderful event,” stated North Reading High boys’ tennis coach and boys soccer coach Mark Bisognano, who ran the event with NRHS girls’ tennis coach Matt Tiberii. “The weather was gorgeous and there was some very good competition.”

The event had 52 participants, which was two more than last October, as the tournament continues to grow each year.

In the men’s (ages 18 and over) final, Nathan Grady defeated Chad Heipler, 6-1, 6-1.

In the women’s final, Sarah Cropper (Hampton, NH) defeated Alisa Atkins (Amherst, NH), 6-2, 6-3.

Brothers, Rich (Pelham, NH) and Matt Lipinski (Arlington), defeated Gabe Entov (Arlington) and Jacob Shuman (Boston), 6-1, 6-2, to capture the men’s doubles final.

The Lipinski brothers ended up facing each other in the mixed doubles final as Rich Lipinski and Haley Doria (North Reading) defeated Matt Lipinski and Carolyn Crabtree (Medford) 6-2, 6-3.

In the women’s doubles final, Nancy Pastore (North Reading) and Michelle Maffeo (Lynnfield) defeated Katie Cronin (North Reading) and Caitlin Croll (Andover) 6-1 6-1

In the boys final (17 and under) John Wiggins (Reading) defeated John Pastore (North Reading) in an exciting three setter, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

“That was a very exciting match,” said Bisognano.

All of the winners and runners-up received gift cards.

With the success of the tournament, Bisognano is looking forward to next year.

“We are hoping to continue to expand the size,” he stated.
