AMESBURY — The Lady Hornets’ basketball season came to an end in the Division 3 North quarterfinals at the hands of the No. 1 seed, the Amesbury Indians, who previously defeated North Reading 48-34 on March 2.
Senior captain Katerina Hassapis was outstanding in the last game of her NRHS career with a team-high 16 points.
The Indians got off to a hot start in the opening quarter. They scored 15 points and held a 15-10 lead over the Hornets by the end of one.
In the second quarter North Reading found a rhythm and took a brief lead midway through the frame. But Amesbury closed the quarter well and turned the deficit into a five-point 27-22 halftime lead.
At the start of the third quarter the Hornets battled back to tie the game up at 27-27. Unfortunately for the next eight minutes superb defense stifled North Reading and Amesbury rolled on a huge scoring run.
The Indians went on a 19-1 run, and by the time sophomore Mia DeNofrio broke the Hornets’ field goal drought, with a little over two minutes left, Amesbury held what turned out to be insurmountable 46-30 lead, ending with a 48-34 loss for North Reading.
The Lady Hornets ended their 2016–17 campaign with an overall record of 11-12.
