NORTH ANDOVER — After a 13 year hiatus, the North Reading High School varsity hockey program will return to Merrimack College for the 2016 season, playing all home games at the college’s J. Thom Lawler Rink.

Completely renovated in 2012–13, the 2,549 seat capacity rink is the home of the Division I Merrimack College Warriors. The Lawler Rink was completely renovated in 2012–13 and looks like new.

School administrators and the players themselves are excited about the move after 13 years at the Burbank Rink in Reading.

“I think it gives the kids a college venue to play in and a strong Division I college hockey venue,” said Athletic Director Dave Johnson.

“It’s local, the students know a lot of the players who play in the Hockey East program here. Merrimack is a strong academic school, so it’s all very positive to for the kids to be here.

Captain Nick Ponte certainly agrees. He’s committed to play Division 2 lacrosse for Merrimack in 2016, so he’s very happy with the new location.

And so is Captain Mike Driscoll. “I really like the ice here. I think it well be a great location for all of our fans and the students to come to our games.”

School Superintendent Jon Bernard praised the Hornets’ new home.

“As for playing our games at Merrimack, I am thrilled. While we enjoyed very much our experience at the Burbank Arena for many years, having our hockey program compete at a college facility is something that will further contribute to elevating the hockey experience for our players,” he said.

Bernard continued: “I am thankful to all those who worked to secure Merrimack College as our home rink and, of course, I am grateful to Merrimack College for allowing us to play at their facility. I am very much looking forward to watching the Hornets play hockey on their new home ice at Merrimack College.”
