WESTFIELD — The North Reading High School cross country teams had their last team contests this past weekend at Stanley Park in Westfield. The program’s top runners competed in the MIAA Division 2B state championship against some of the best teams in the state. The boys’ team finished 17th overall and the girls finished 18th overall.

“We competed very well today and everyone should be so proud of their efforts today and all season,” said Hornets head coach Ryan Spinney.

Butler Takes 8th Overall, Qualifies for All State Division 2 Final on Saturday

Senior Captain Annalise Butler had an exceptional race as her 8th place finish earned her a medal and a trip to the All State Division 2 championship this weekend at Willard Field in Devens.

“Annalise competed so tough all season and for her to be able to represent our team next week at the All State final is extremely well deserved,” said Spinney.

Butler finished 20th last year in the 2B race and not only did she improve 12 spots, she improved by over 90 seconds from her time last fall.

“Annalise is the perfect example of how hard work pays off,” said Spinney.

Sophomore Ava Collins placed 2nd for the Hornets and was 70th overall in a time of 22:38.33. Junior captain Allison Koenig (111th overall, 24:59.14), junior Stella DaSilva (123rd, 25:35.57), Sophomore Vanessa Steinmeyer (127th, 26:27.98) and Junior Sophie Saquet (141st, 31:27.60) rounded out the Hornet competitors on the day.

“We have five out of our six girls who competed today back next fall so this will be a great learning experience going into next season,” said Spinney. “Lots to be proud of and lots to improve upon going forward.”

Hemme takes 59th, Fabrizio finishes 67th

Senior Michael Hemme was the top Hornet finisher in the boys’ race as he placed 59th overall in a time of 18:07.08. He was followed by Senior captain Nicholas Fabrizio who finished 67th in a time of 18:18.73. Sophomore Nico Johnson was 79th in a time of 18:27.63, Senior Rocco Tammaro finished 122nd in a time of 19:35.39, Senior Matthew Manupelli took 131st in a time of 19:55.71, Freshman Cole Fabrizio placed 140th in a time of 20:20.81 and Senior Ben Meier finished 143rd in a time of 20:33.17.

“Michael, Nicholas and Nico set a solid tone today to lead our team,” said Spinney. “Everyone competed hard and left it all out there. No one can ask for more than that. We are very proud of all of them.”

The Hornets team season may be complete but Butler will run one more time at Devens on Saturday, November 19 at the Division 2 All State Final. Good luck, Annalise and Go Hornet XC!
