NORTH READING — On a rainy evening on Tuesday, the North Reading High girls soccer team was edged, 1-0, by guest Newburyport. The Clippers were able to sweep the season series with that victory and they also snapped the Hornets three-match winning streak.

With the defeat, the Hornets record dipped to 12-3-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the Cape Ann League as they are in third place in the CAL Kinney division behind Newburyport and Pentucket.

The lone goal came 13:25 into the first half as Deirdre McElhinney scored.

Hornet goalie, Maggie Schultz, made nine saves as her record fell to 12-3-1.

Last Friday night, the news was much better as the Hornets blanked Rockport, 5-0 at home on Senior Night. This one was decided early as the Hornets led, 4-0, 16:40 into the game.

Alyssa Bradley scored 9:06 in assisted by Maya Nickerson for the first goal. Kiera Osterlind then made it 2-0 at the 14:15 mark with Marisa Montana assisting.

Sami Patch had the final goal at the 34:35 mark of the first half assisted by Bradley as all five goals came in the opening half.

Schultz made two stops against the Vikings to record her seventh shutout of the year.

“It was a perfect evening to celebrate the seniors who have represented the team and program with pride for the past four years,” said Hornets head coach Sean Killeen, who started 11 of the team’s 12 seniors as forward Kylie Gettings is injured.

On Oct. 27, the Hornets visit Pentucket at 4:30 pm looking to avenge a 2-0 loss to the Sachems back on Oct. 12th.

North Reading wraps up the regular season on Oct. 20   as they visit non-league Bishop Fenwick up in Peabody. That game will start at noon.

Early next week, the seedings will come out for the Division 3 state tournament. The Hornets entered this week as the 14th seed. The top 32 schools at the end of the regular season automatically qualify.
