NORTH READING — The North Reading High volleyball team shut out guest Pentucket, 3-0, on Monday evening on Senior Night. With that victory, the Hornets improved to 7-11 overall and 5-8 in the Cape Ann League. They were also able to compete the season sweep over the Sachems as they won the first match-up, 3-2, back on Sept. 28.
The Hornets won the three matches, 25-10, 25-12, and 25-19.
“We were able to play the seniors the entire night and it was a lot of fun,” said North Reading head coach Mike Milone.
Kaitlin Murnane and Samantha Mutti both had six kills while Mia Pittore had four service aces. Yasmine Farias had 12 digs and Abby Gerber had 21 assists..
Before the match, the five Hornet seniors (Farias, Pittore, Gerber, Izzy Milone and Maddie Koenig) were honored.
In the title game of the Medford Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament on Sunday, the Hornets lost, 3-0, to host Medford.
The Mustangs, a team out of the Greater Boston League, won, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-18.
“They are a very good team with a lot of athletes,” said Milone. “They also have a great libro.”
Geber had 12 assists and six kills while Mutti also had six kills.
In the first game of the tournament on Saturday, North Reading beat Saugus 3-0. The three scores were, 25-21,25-14, and 25-20.
“We did a good job of staying in our system that match,” said Milone.
Gerber had 17 assists to go with seven service aces. Murnane had ten kills while Koenig had eight digs.
On Oct. 20, in its Dig Pink game for Breast Cancer Awareness, the Hornets beat visiting Georgetown, 3-0, to complete the season sweep over the Royals. North Reading won the three sets, 25-7, 25-21, and 25-16.
Milone and Koenig both had nine digs while Mutti had nine kills. Gerber had 20 assists, 11 serves aces and nine kills.
North Reading wraps up the regular season on Oct. 27 as they visit Hamilton-Wenham at 5:30 pm. In the season opener on Sept. 7, the Generals won the first meeting, 3-1, as the Hornets are trying to split the season series.
North Reading entered this week seeded 19th in the Division 3 MIAA power rankings. The top 32 schools at the end of the season automatically qualify for the states.
The seedings for the states will come out on Halloween with the games starting later next week.
