WWII Army officer was a manager at GE

WEST HARWICH, MA/FT. PIERCE, FL — James Chekos, 94, passed away June 13, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on August 16, 1922, a son of Harry and Pauline (Glatis) Chekos. Jim graduated from East Boston High School and Huntington Prep School in Boston. He went on to Northeastern University, but left to join the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Jim went to Officers Candidate School and was commissioned as an Armor Officer. He left active duty at the end of the war, and continued in active reserve status until retiring in 1982 as a Lt. Colonel in the capacity as a General Staff Officer of the 94th Infantry Division in Boston.
Jim was joined in marriage with Georgia Karafotis of Manchester, NH, on July 15, 1945.
In 1947 Jim joined General Electric Aviation, working in the military jet engine group, retiring in 1984 as a Senior Manager for worldwide logistics systems. He was an active member of the General Electric ELFUN Society.
Jim and Georgia enjoyed retirement, spending time with family and friends in their homes in Cape Cod and Ft. Pierce. They were active members in the Greek Orthodox churches St. George in Cape Cod, and St. Nicholas in Ft. Pierce.
Jim is survived by three children, Harry Chekos and his wife Kathleen, Thalia June Thompson and her husband Steven, and Mark Chekos and his wife Carla; five grandchildren, Dr. Amy Sedgwick, James Chekos, Andrea Miller, Stephanie Baxley and Alexander Chekos; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Gabrielle Sedgwick.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia, in 2012; and his brother, Nicholas Chakos in 2008.
A calling hour will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover St., Manchester, NH with the funeral service beginning at 12 noon on Friday, June 16, 2017.
