Retired firefighter, loved being in cabin up north and gardening

MELROSE — John M. White, Jr., of Melrose, passed away at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital on June 17 at the age of 84.

John was born in Boston, grew up in Roslindale in a large loving family. He went to Roxbury Memorial, where he learned the printing trade. Later, he met Ann and together they forged a life in Melrose, where he joined the Melrose Fire Department. They had four children together. John had a dry sense of humor (always telling the kids he walked uphill to school both ways and sure enough he proved it). John retired after 30 years on the fire department. He loved going to the cabin up north (his happy place). He loved his garden for many years. He will be sorely missed by all who spent time with him especially family.

John was the beloved husband of Ann M. (Richards) White. Loving father of Patricia A. Lund; John J. White and his wife Cassie; and Daniel J. White, all of Melrose; and Kathleen M. Mulkern and her husband Robert of Saugus. Caring brother of 6 deceased siblings. Also survived by 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Monday, June 26 from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
