Joseph-Meehan-obit-7-21-17_webMELROSE — Joseph A. Meehan, 46, of Melrose died on July 2, 2017 from a long and tragic battle with addiction.

Joe is survived by his beloved children, Jessica and Joseph, and his ex-wife Kelly (Robbins) Meehan of Haverhill. He was the son of the late Marie (Boire) Meehan and Robert Meehan of Melrose. He was the cherished little brother of Debra Lucey and her fiancée Glenn Rougeau of North Adams, Robert and Ellen Meehan of Wakefield, and Stephen Meehan of Worcester. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Joe was known by many who knew him as a gentle giant. He was soft spoken and never had a harsh word for anyone. He had a wonderful and full life before a back injury led him into a prison of pain and addiction.

He was a lifelong WWE wrestling fan and avid Boston sports enthusiast, especially hockey. He named his prized boxer Bruin and watched all of the games faithfully with her by his side. Joe had an amazing appetite, and never met a food he didn’t like. He was always opening any refrigerator in sight no matter who it belonged to. He was always willing to lend a helping hand with no questions asked, especially moving family and friends from one spot to another. He was strong as an ox and made lifting furniture look like child’s play. He was so proud of owning his own home in Derry with Kelly, where he loved entertaining family and friends. He was always ready to travel with his sister Deb and her children, and would usually bring a cooler of meat. Joe had a belly laugh that was like no other.

Above all, Joe treasured the children that he sadly was never able to care for due to his addiction, but whom he never stopped loving. He proudly showed off their names tattooed on his arm and wished desperately he could have been the father they deserved. They were the crowning achievement of his life and his living legacy of love. Finally at peace with his parents, Joe can watch over his Jessica and Joey from Heaven.

Burial will be private. Contributions may be sent to an education fund set up for his children, Jessica and Joseph Meehan, c/o Merrimack Valley Credit Union, 2 Water Street, Haverhill, MA 01830. The Gately Funeral Home, Melrose, was in charge of arrangements.
