WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Knights of Columbus, Council #104, held its annual “K of C Free Throw Championship” on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Charbonneau Field House at Wakefield Memorial High School.

This competition was open to all Wakefield boys and girls, ages 9 through 14.

The winning girl was: Age 10 – Maeve Gaffney. Other age girls didn’t compete.

The winning boys were: Age 9 – Matthew Gaffney; Age 11 – Max Dimella; Age 12 – Paul Holnan; and Age 13 – Lucas Smith. No age 10 boys or 14-year-old boys competed.

Smith was tied with Liam Cosgrove but Smith prevailed in a shootout.

The top sharpshooters were Dimella and Holman with each sinking 12 out of 15 foul shots.

These five winners competed in the K of C District championship which was held on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Andover Knights of Columbus, Council #1078, located at 10 Brook St. in Andover. The competition ran from 9 a.m.-noon. Each contestant shot 25 free throws and will do so in future competitions. Birth certificates are necessary when the children register at the District, Regional and State competitions.

The Northern Regional competition will be held at the Parker Middle School in Reading on Saturday, March 21. The starting time will be 9 a.m. with registrations starting at 8 a.m. The State Finals will be held on March 28 at Nichols College in Dudley.

Grand Knight (GK) Jack Roche thanks all the young shooters who took time to compete and he wishes all the winners well as they compete at the next level. Each contestant was given a certificate noting their participation while the winners received a Council Champion Certificate and a Champion plaque.

This event was successful because of the efforts of Chairman Bob Curran, Jack O’Leary, Jack Roche, Bill Lovett, Brian Brickley, Jason Zerfas and Dave Curran.
