WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Knights of Columbus, Council #104, held its eighth annual “Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge” at Nasella Playground on Sunday, Sept. 28. The competition was open to all boys and girls, ages 9 through 14.

The winning girl was: Age 11 – Jessica Maffe. It was ironic but all of the girls who competed were 11 years old so there was only one winner.

The winning boys were: Age 9 – Finn Wilson; Age 10 – William Townshend; Age 11 – Lucas Pastore; Age 12 – Liam Cosgrove; no age 13 or 14 boys competed. Last year, William Townshend was the state champion for the 9-year-old boys.

Each competitor had 15 kicks at the goal from 12 yards out with ropes dividing the goal into different scoring areas. The top kicker for the girls was Maffe with 125 points, while for the boys, Townshend and Cosgrove, each had 125 points.

Each contestant was given a certificate noting their participation while the winners will receive a Council Champion Certificate and a Champion Plaque.

These winners were scheduled to compete in the K of C North Regional Soccer Challenge for Districts 19-27 and 49 on Oct. 11 at the O’Neil Park Soccer Field which is located just north of the Lawrence Public Library on Lawrence Street in Lawrence. At this level of competition everyone has 25 kicks from 12 yards after three practice kicks. Registration was scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and the challenge was scheduled to start at noon.

The State finals will be on Nov.16 at Holy Cross College in Worcester.

The event was successful because of the efforts of Chairman Bob Curran, Jack O’Leary, Brian Brickley, Jason Zerfas, Dave Curran, Jack Roche, John Hourihan, Tim Green, Bill Lovett and Garry Conrad.
