Fall in OT to Generals 47-46

NORTH READING — Despite a season-high 20 points from senior captain Katerina Hassapis, the Hornets girls’ basketball team fell to the Hamilton-Wenham Generals 47-46 in overtime on January 24.

Sophomore Casey McAuliffe and freshman Ali Grasso both chipped in 8 points apiece.

The Generals played slightly better than North Reading in the first half. By halftime the Hamilton-Wenham lead was 23-17.

Both offenses got rolling in the third quarter. A combined 23 points was scored, but the Hornets couldn’t cut into the lead and the Generals took a 35-28 advantage to the fourth quarter.

It was all Hornets in the fourth. They stormed back with 13 points in the quarter and only surrendered six points to force the game into overtime.

Unfortunately, in the extra frame Hamilton-Wenham outscored North Reading 6-5 and escaped with the one-point victory.

Stung at Masco 44-35

The Masconomet Chieftains handed the Lady Hornets their third loss in four games with their 44-35 victory on Thursday night. Sophomore Mia DeNofrio led North Reading with eight points.

The Hornets got off to a solid start. They scored 12 points in the first quarter and led 12-9 after one. In the second quarter offense was hard to come by. A total of nine points was scored but North Reading managed to increase the lead to 17-13 at the half.

Unfortunately in the second half it was all Masconomet. They outscored the Hornets 31-18 to go on to victory.

Upcoming games

The team traveled to Newburyport Tuesday (after press time) and will host Pentucket on Friday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. They travel to Everett Sunday, Feb. 5 (time TBA) and will host Charlestown Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
