NORTH READING — The Lady Hornets girls soccer team upended the No. 1 seeded Hamilton–Wenham Generals 1–0 (5–4) in a penalty shootout in the Div. 3 North semi-finals in Lynn Tuesday night. Senior Jill Comeau scored the winning kick. The girls will play Bishop Fenwick Saturday in Lynn at Manning Field (time to be announced) for the Division 3 North crown.

Beat Shawsheen, 2–1

North Reading opened tournament play with a 2-1 home victory over the Shawsheen Tech Rams on November 4 in the first round of the girls’ soccer Division 3 North Sectional tournament. Senior Anna Tayas and sophomore Juliette Nadeau scored for North Reading.

The Hornets controlled the first half and in the seventh minute Tayas put them on the board. With the ball about 20 yards out Tayas looked up, saw that the Rams’ goalie was far off the goal line and lofted her shot over the keeper for the goal.

Later in the half Nadeau made it 2-0 when she ripped a shot from just inside the box into the top corner of the net in the 31st minute. North Reading took a 2-0 lead into the half.

Rams answer

It looked like the Hornets were going to cruise to victory but in the 67th minute the Rams cut into the lead. Junior goalkeeper Katerina Hassapis attempted to make a save and collided with a Shawsheen player. The ball rolled right to a Ram forward who finished into the open net.

Fortunately the Hornets were strong defensively the rest of the way and went on to victory.

Sting Triton 3-1

The Hornets moved on to the Division 3 North quarterfinals with their 3-1 victory over the Triton Vikings on November 8. Juliette Nadeau scored two goals for North Reading.

The game did not start out well for the Hornets. Just four minutes in Triton took a quick lead. Keeper Kat Hassapis got caught too far off the goal line on a corner and a Viking forward headed it in the net.

After the goal North Reading took control. Finally, in the 28th minute, junior Marissa Zarella took a nice through ball from sophomore Karlie Vesey and finished past the keeper to tie it up.

A little over five minutes later Nadeau gave the Hornets the lead. Nadeau found the ball at the top of the box and patiently finished past the on-rushing goalie. The lead was 2-1 at the half.

Seal the deal

North Reading started off the second half with a bang. In the 43rd minute sophomore Rachel Hill sent in a free kick and it appeared the goalie would make a save. But she coughed up the rebound and Nadeau finished off her second goal of the game.
