PEABODY — Laurent Joseph Benoit Sr., 89, of Brooksby Village, Peabody, formerly of Wakefield, beloved husband of June Veronica (Marquis) Benoit, died Sunday, April 16, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late Philippe and Rhea (Paquin) Benoit. He was raised and educated in Woonsocket, R.I. and was a graduate of Clinton High School. He attended Bar Harbor Seminary and was a graduate of Assumption College. He earned his master’s of Education degree from George Washington University.
An honorably discharged veteran he served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard/Merchant Marines during World War II.
Mr. Benoit had been employed as an educator at Wakefield Memorial High School. For many years, he held the position of Chair of the Foreign Language Department of Wakefield Memorial High School until the time of his retirement in 1987. He had a gifted mind and tongue and spoke five languages fluently.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Larry was a resident of the town of Wakefield for over 40 years until moving to Brooksby Village in 2005.
Active in professional and social circles, Larry was a member of the Wakefield Elks Club for over 60 years where he served on the Scholarship Committee. He was a member of the Teacher Union AFL/CIO and enjoyed spending his time golfing. For over 15 years, Larry and his beloved wife June spent their winters in Venice Florida, where he was a member of the American Legion Post 159.
Above all else he was devoted to his wife and family. As a family and couple, they traveled extensively throughout the continental United States and across the globe. From camping to cruises they created many memories together that will last forever.
He will be remembered for his devotion to his students, his dedication to his country, and his love of family. He will be deeply missed.
Laurent is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, June Veronica (Marquis) Benoit of Peabody; his children, Michele Procopio and her husband William of Derry, N.H., Laurent J. Benoit Jr and his wife Mary of Wellesley, Lisa Erban and her husband Dr. John Erban of Wakefield, and Christopher Benoit of Somerville; his grandchildren, Laura and her husband Adam, Julie, John and his fiancé John, Ashley, Stephen and Jackie; his great-grandchildren, Henry and Eloise, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Estelle Ryan and Vivian Kirby.
His funeral services are private. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St. (Route 62), Danvers.
