WAKEFIELD — Lawrence J. McLaughlin, 96, a retired lieutenant colonel, U.S. Army, and former longtime Wakefield resident, died August 7 in Colorado.

He was born on January 7, 1920 and was the son of the late William and Bridget (Murray) McLaughlin. He was raised in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School.

He later entered into service of the U.S. Army and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. While serving during World War II he received both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medals. He later worked for the former Frank B. Hall Insurance Company of Boston from where he retired in 1984 as vice president of Claims.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Reserve Officers Association of the 9th Infantry Division.

He had been a Wakefield resident since 1947.

He was the husband of the late Doris M. (Ramsey) McLaughlin. He is survived by his son Neil L. McLaughlin of Colorado and was also the father of the late Gail L. McLaughlin-Lamy and the late Jean L. McLaughlin. He is also survived by his two grandchildren.

Private interment services will held at the V.A. National Cemetery of MA in Bourne.
