LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield-North Reading co-op wrestling team went undefeated last week.

The Black and Gold (16-1-1) began last week edging Triton 36-33 on Jan. 8.

With the match tied 33-33, junior Dylan Mathews (285 lbs.) clinched LNR’s victory after winning his match by a 3-2 decision.

“The match was tied at 33-33 going into the 285 lb. match,” said LNR head coach Craig Stone.  “It was a battle of momentum swings. LNR led 18-3 after four matches. Triton won the next four to go up 24-18.  LNR rallied by winning the next two to lead 27-24.  Triton jumped back up 30-27, only to yield the next match to LNR 33-30.  Triton won a decision at 215 lbs. to tie it all at 33-33 and setting the stage for the winner take all match at 285 lbs.”

Freshman Mickey Glynn (113 lbs.) earned his first varsity win after pinning his opponent at 1:20. Sophomore Jacob Hulett (126 lbs.) won his match by fall at 1:48. Captain David Glynn (157 lbs.) defeated his opponent by a 20-4 technical fall. Senior captain Cam Arya (165 lbs.) defeated his counterpart by a 10-1 major decision. Senior captain James Fodera (190 lbs.) won his match by injury default. Sophomore Nathan Barstow (120 lbs.) won his match by forfeit.

Stone noted that LNR last defeated Triton in 2017. He said the match was Triton’s first loss this season.

“It was just a great dual meet for the athletes and the crowd,” said Stone.  “We split the individual matches won 7-7. The difference was our team saving team points by only losing decisions and not by pin, and by earning extra team points with a major decision and a technical fall instead of a decision. Most people think of wrestling being an individual sport due to the emphasis on each weight class. But it is the accumulative effect of the participants in all 14 weight classes that determines the team’s success.”

Sweeps super quad

The Black and Gold swept Bedford/Acton-Boxborough, Salem and Belmont during a super quad on Jan. 11 at North Reading High School.

LNR defeated Bedford/Acton-Boxborough 50-30.

“LNR won nine out of 14 matches,” said Stone. “We led from start to finish.”

The Black and Gold dismantled Salem 54-29.

“LNR was down 29-18 after the first eight matches,” said Stone. “We won the next six matches by pin. We had not beaten Salem since 2020.”

The Black and Gold defeated Belmont 45-30.

Barstow (120 lbs.) pinned his opponent at 1:47. Hulett (126 lbs.) brought his counterpart to the ground at 2:52. David Glynn (157 lbs.) won his match by fall at 4:37. Arya (165 lbs.) pinned his opponent at 5:13.

“LNR was down 30-12 after the first eight classes,” said Stone. “We won the next six matches.”

Stone praised the Black and Gold’s command performance during the super quad meet.

“Our team has been showing great balance with all wrestlers stepping forward to get needed wins at different times,” said Stone.  “We had three quality wins over two Division 1 programs, Bedford/Acton-Boxborough and Belmont, and a Division 2 team in Salem.  We will need to keep that concept of TEAM (Together Each Achieves More) to continually drive ourselves through the rest of the season.”
