MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA — Last fall, the Lynnfield High golf team finished at 8-4 overall and they were 6-4 in the Cape Ann League. When tryouts started for this season started in late August, head coach Mike Moresco had just three veterans returning this season.

Two of the returners are this year’s co-captains Deven Henehan and Gavin Leuci who are both juniors.

Despite their youth, the Pioneers entered this week on a three-match winning streak as they beat host Manchester-Essex, 126-108, at Essex Country Club on Sept. 15.  It was the team’s third win in three consecutive days.

With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 4-3 overall and in the Cape Ann League. They are in third place in the CAL Kinney Division behind Triton and Newburyport.

“With only three varsity golfers returning this year, the team has quickly grown in experience and has seen their play steadily improve over the past couple of weeks,” pointed out Moresco. “They are great young men who always put the time in on the practice range and putting green and they have super attitudes.”

The day before the Manchester-Essex win, the Pioneers beat host North Reading, 150-127, at HillView Country Club.

The winning streak started on Sept. 13 as they won, 127-71, against Amesbury and Amesbury Country Club.

On Sept. 8, the Pioneers lost at home to Triton, 145-135, at Sagamore Spring Golf Club. They also fell to Rockport, 135-128, at home on Sept. 7.

Lynnfield also played two matches at the end of August as they lost at Sagamore to Hamilton-Wenham in the season opener, 152-147, on Aug. 30. They got their first win on Aug. 31 as they beat guest Newburyport, 138-120.

The other players on the roster are Paul Daley (sophomore), Owen Doherty (sophomore), Niko Kozakis (junior), Owen Mullin (junior), Joe Raffa (junior), Zach Benedetto (junior), Ryan MacEachern (junior), Brady Field (sophomore), Drew Orlofski (sophomore) and Jarrett Scoppettuolo (junior).

Scoppettuolo has been out with an injury but is close to returning.

Lynnfield will play on Sept. 21 and 22. On the 21st, they travel to Black Swan Country Club to take on host Georgetown at 3:30 p.m. The next day, they host Pentucket at 3 p.m.

On Sept. 27, they welcome Ipswich with that match also staring at 3 p.m.
