Lynnfield High School Athletic Director

LYNNFIELD — Mia Muzio is the new athletic director at Lynnfield High School as she takes over for Mike Bierwirth, who left back in June. Muzio, who officially started on July 1, was the athletic director at Wilmington High the past two seasons.

“I found out about the opening in March,” she recalled. “I then applied and got the job in April. It was not an easy decision (to leave Wilmington) but my goal was to get back to the Cape Ann League.”

Her ties to the league started when she was in high school as she graduated from Rockport High in 2007. At Rockport, she played field hockey and softball.

Muzio then graduated from Ithaca College in upstate New York with a degree in legal studies in 2011. She then got a degree in sports leadership from Northeastern in 2014 and then a master’s in education from the Harvard Graduate School in 2016.

Muzio was the varsity field hockey coach at North Reading from 2012-2017. She was also the junior varsity coach in softball at Rockport from 2014-2016. From 2017-2019 she also coached field hockey and softball at Triton.

“My field hockey coach at Rockport, Mary Ryan, was also the athletic director and a mentor for me,” stated Muzio, about her strong bonds to the CAL. “I also worked in the athletic departments at Hamilton-Wenham and Triton.”

In 2019-2020, she was the interim athletic director at Weymouth High before becoming at AD at Wilmington High starting in 2020.

“The athletic directors in this league are all solid people so there is a lot of opportunity for growth,” said Muzio.

Muzio likes Lynnfield High’s facilities and she is looking to add to the sports programs for the future.

“There has been some interest in rugby and e-sports,” said Muzio, as more schools are getting into competitive video games.

When it comes to expanding the CAL with Masconomet leaving in Sept. 2020, she is unsure as of now.

“I have no solid opinion about expansion,” said Muzio, as Essex Tech has been considered as a possible new addition. “Right now we have 11 teams.”

Another sport Muzio will deal with is gymnastics. Lynnfield was a co-op with state power Masconomet for many years and that relationship ended back in 2019.

Last winter, Lynnfield had a co-op set up with Hamilton-Wenham but no Lynnfield gymnast opted in.

Muzio plans to get in contact with Hamilton-Wenham’s AD this fall and try to get that new co-op together.

“The more opportunities for the kids, the better,” said Muzio.

Muzio is happy with the girls’ hockey co-op with North Reading and host school, Peabody and wants to keep that relationship going.

“They have had a lot of success,” pointed out Muzio.

The first official meet-and-greet for Muzio with the Lynnfield fall coaches will be Aug. 22. Muzio feels that it will help her with the fact that all of the fall varsity coaches are returning and know the lay of the land.

“I am also excited to meet and work with the kids,” she said. “Starting any new job you have to acclimate and that is what I am doing now.”

Along with being the athletic director, Muzio also has the title of the K-12 Physical Education, Health and Wellness Coordinator.

Actual games for the fall season for Lynnfield High will start the first week of September.
