METHUEN — Lynnfield-North Reading co-op wrestling senior captain Sean McCullough finished third in the All-State Tournament at Methuen High School last weekend.

McCullough went 4-1 in the 182 lb. weight class en route to becoming a back-to-back All-State place finisher. He pinned Wayland’s Marcos Pereira, who finished fifth in the Division 3 tournament, at 1:07 during the first round. McCullough defeated Braintree’s Luciano Kodheli, a Division 1 state champion, by a 7-1 decision in the quarterfinals.

Hampshire Regional High School’s Michael Baldwin, a Division 3 state champion, defeated McCullough by a 7-5 decision during the semifinals.

“The semifinals was a close back-and-forth match,” said Black and Gold head coach Craig Stone. “It was not decided until the final seconds.”

McCullough began the first consolation round defeating New Bedford’s Alexis Maldanado, a Division 1 state runner-up, by a 7-5 decision. He defeated Woburn’s David Langlois by a 10-4 decision during the second consolation round. McCullough had previously defeated Langlois during the Division 2 state tournament semifinals last month.

Stone recalled that McCullough finished seventh during last year’s All-State Tournament.

“Sean is LNR’s second two-time All-State place finisher,” said Stone. “Eric Kerr had previously placed fourth at 113 lbs. in 2013 and placed seventh at 126 lbs. in 2014. Sean is now LNR’s highest All-State place finisher over the past 16 years of the co-op.”

McCullough will wrestle in the New England Tournament at Methuen High School on Saturday and Sunday.

“Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday,” said Stone. “The tournament combines the top state place finishers from the six New England states.”
