LYNNFIELD — It was a good news, bad news situation for the Lynnfield High golf team last Thursday as they took on host Essex Tech in town at Reedy Meadow.

The good news is that the Pioneers posted their all-time scoring record in a match with 193 points breaking their previous record of 186, which took place last year.

The bad news is that they lost by one point, 194-193.

It is the first loss for the Pioneers since the 2022 season as they fell to 3-1 while the Hawks improved to 2-0.

Lynnfield’s last loss took place against Newburyport on Sept. 29 of 2022 as they fell 136-133, in a road match.

“It was nip-and-tuck throughout the match,” said Lynnfield head coach Mike Moresco. “They have a heck of a team and they took advantage of playing on their home-course.”

Lynnfield was led by Owen Doherty as the senior co-captain shot even par to accumulate 36 points (Stableford scoring). Fellow senior co-captain, Paul Daley, was second with 34 while sophomore Brady Cole had 32.

Freshman, Max Sabbagh, scored 31 points while Drew George and C.J. Patermo both had 30 points.

“You can’t complain when your top six golfers all score at least 30 points,” said Moresco. “It was an impressive performance.”

On Sept. 3, the Pioneers beat guest Pentucket, 163-126, at Sagamore Spring.

Patermo was the medalist in this match as he had 29 points.

“This is his first year on the team,” pointed out Moresco, about the junior.

Dailey and Cole both had 28 points while Sabbagh scored 26.

“Max is the first freshman in our line-up in five years and he had quite a debut,” recalled Moresco.

Doherty and senior co-captain Brady Field rounded out the scoring with 26 points each.

“We had consistent, balanced scoring throughout the line-up,” said Moresco.

Lynnfield’s next match will be on Wednesday (Sept. 11) as they go to Rowley County Club to take on host Newburyport in a key early-season match as the Clippers came in second place in the Cape Ann League to the Pioneers last fall.

That match will start at 4:15 p.m.

The next day, the Pioneers will welcome Hamilton-Wenham at Sagamore and that match will start at 3 p.m.
