NORTH READING — The LHS baseball team had to deal with two different Hornets in one week. The Pioneers traveled to North Reading on Thursday before hitting the road again to meet Manchester-Essex on Saturday.

Lynnfield fell to North Reading 3-2 but beat Manchester-Essex 8-0, bringing their record to 6-7 on the season. The Pioneers have been playing good baseball recently as they have won five of their last seven games.

Mirroring their epic nine-inning battle that ended 2-1 North Reading in the season-opener, the two teams played yet another close game at Carey Park. It was 2-1 Lynnfield after the first inning but the Hornets came through with two runs in the 4th and the Pioneers couldn’t get the bats going again.

Lynnfield starter Tim Pivero (6IP, 6H, 3R, 0ER, 5K, 0BB)  out-dueled his counterpart Ryan Baker (7IP, 10H, 2R, 0ER, 3K, 1BB) but an aggressive Hornet team put enough pressure on the defense to scratch out three runs.

The Pioneers had three players collect multiple hits in this one: Aidan Burke (3-for-4), Evan Balian (2-for-4) and Luke Martinho (2-for-4). Spencer Riley had the big hit for Lynnfield in the 1st inning with a two-RBI single.  Lynnfield has two games left in the regular season, first against Pentucket on Thursday, then another one against North Reading on Monday. Both of those games will be on the road.
