“It was a lot closer than the final score indicated,” said Pioneers head coach Jon Gardner. “When we got up 2-1 we were able to shut them down the rest of the game.”

Pioneer defenseman Joe Mack scored unassisted at the 7:17 mark of the first period to open the scoring. The Chieftains tied it with 2:45 remaining in the first as Dylen Campbell scored assisted by Zach Smith and Will Major.

After a scoreless second period, Lynnfield struck again just 33 seconds into the third as Jaret Simpson scored, unassisted.

With 1:33 left in the game, George DeRoche made it 3-1, assisted by linemates Robert Brandano and Tyler Murphy.

Mack then scored on the empty net 23 seconds later to close the door.

Both teams had 21 shots on goal as goalie Aiden Kelly made 20 saves to go to 8-2-1 in net.

On Wednesday night at 8:15, the Pioneers host Pentucket. This Saturday afternoon at 4, the Lynnfield welcomes Amesbury to end the seven-game homestand.
