LYNNFIELD —  The Lynnfield High boys’ hockey team concluded last week with a tie and a win, bringing the Pioneers’ overall record to 11-4-4.

The Pioneers faced host Westwood in a non-league game at the Canton Ice House on Feb. 16. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.

“It was a good up-and-down game, and both teams had some good opportunities,” said Lynnfield head coach Jon Gardner. “They have a very good team and the game had a tournament type feel to it.”

The Pioneers outshot the Wolverines 19-18, as Lynnfield goalie and senior captain Aiden Kelly (11-4-4) posted his third shutout of the year.

The Pioneers defeated rival North Reading 4-0 at the McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody on Feb. 13. Lynnfield’s victory completed the season sweep over the Hornets.

Lynnfield finished 7-2-3 in the Cape Ann League, as they came in second place in the league behind Masconomet.

After a scoreless opening period, the Pioneers lit the lamp twice in the second and third periods.

Senior captain George DeRoche scored a goal 5:59 into the second period, assisted by senior Will Garofoli. Three minutes later on the power play, DeRoche scored again. Garofoli and senior captain Jaret Simpson had the assists.

The Pioneers made it 3-0 with 11:50 remaining in the third period after Garofoli scored, assisted by DeRoche. DeRoche, the team’s top scorer, then got his third hat trick of the year with 8:53 left, with Simpson assisting.

“All of the seniors played well,” said Gardner, as it was Lynnfield’s Senior Night. “They didn’t let all of the pre-game stuff effect them.”

The Pioneers’ 10 seniors were honored before the game.

Lynnfield outshot the Hornets 25-20, as Kelly made all 20 stops.
