LYNNFIELD — In a non-league game on Monday evening, the Lynnfield High boys’ basketball team lost to guest Wilmington, 63-42. With that defeat, the Pioneers record fell to 0-3.

“We struggled on offense in the half-court in the first half,” said Lynnfield head coach John Bakopolus, as Wilmington led, 27-8, at halftime. “We cut it to 11 in the fourth but ran out of gas.”

Freshman forward, Alex Fleming, led the Pioneers with a double-double as he had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mekki Peters, a senior center, had 9 points.

Last Friday night, the Pioneers lost at home to Newburyport by a final of 73-51. The Clippers led this one, 37-21, at the half.

“They have a very strong starting five,” said Bakopolus.

Junior guard, Cam Marengi, led the locals with 13 points while Fleming added 11. Sophomore, Chris Daniels, had 10 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.

Freshman, Gavin Deluties, chipped in 8 points as the team had balanced scoring.

The Clippers were led by Jack Fehlner who had a game-high 19 points

That loss dropped the Pioneers to 0-2 in the Cape Ann League.

On opening night back on Dec. 14, the Pioneers lost at Hamilton-Wenham, 66-48. Lynnfield had no answer for Markus Nordin who poured in 30 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.

“He is probably the best player in our league,” stated Bakopolus, about the senior guard.

The Generals led this one, 27-18, at the half as they were outscored, 39-30, in the second stanza.

Daniels had 11 points while Deluties and Steve Dreher both scored 10. Dreher had a team-high six assists from his point guard role.

“Steve did a great job in that game,” pointed out Bakopolus.

Daniels also led the team in rebounds with seven.

Lynnfield will look for its first win on Dec. 22 as they visit Pentucket at 6:30 p.m. They then go to Wilmington on Dec. 28 during Christmas Vacation Week. That game will start at 2:30 pm.
