WEST NEWBURY — It was a successful season opener for the Lynnfield High boys’ basketball team last Friday night as they traveled to West Newbury and defeated host Pentucket 65-59.

The Pioneers led this game, 27-20, at the half and were able to expand their lead to 17 in the third quarter.

However, the Panthers rallied and cut the lead to four with just over three minutes remaining in the game.

From there, the Pioneers were able to hold on.

“We showed great resolve late,” said Lynnfield head coach John Bakopolus. “They hit 12 three-pointers with most of them coming in the second half but we were able to hold on.”

Senior Chris Daniels led the way for the locals with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

“He showed a lot of leadership and played an awesome game,” stated Bakopolus, about the guard. “He was also 8-for-8 from the foul line.”

Junior forward, Alex Fleming, recorded a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Ian McCarthy led the team in assista as the junior captain had 9.

Pentucket (0-1) was led in scoring by Dylan Scott who had a game-high 24 points as he knocked down 8 3-pointers. Peter Hart added 12.

The Pioneers will compete during the school vacation week next week as they will participate in the Patriot Holiday Tournament at Revere High.

Lynnfield will play the host school on Dec. 27 at 5 p.m. They will then either play East Boston or Malden in the championship or consolation game the next day (time to be determined).
