LYNNFIELD — Two members of the Lynnfield High boys’ indoor track and field team were named to the Cape Ann League All-Stars. The coaches voting took place on Apr. 29.

The two Pioneers to make the team were senior captains John Briggs and Mike Madden. It is the first time on the All-Star team for both of them.

Briggs made it in the shot put as he went 4-1. He was the team’s MVP as he scored the most points.

“He improved a lot over last year,” said Pioneers head coach Christine Smith, who just completed her sixth season. “He became a real leader for us.”

Briggs is going to Norwich this fall.

Madden made the All-Star team in the 1,000 meters. He also ran in the relays, mile and two mile.

“He is a very versatile member with all that he does,” said Smith. “He actually asked to do the 4×200.”

Smith went on to say that Madden is a quiet leader who leads by example.

Along with Briggs and Madden, the team will lose four other seniors to graduation: Mike Dreher (thrower and 600 meters), Jake Sorianno (distance), Anthony Palmer (shot put and 100 meters) and Cole Trainor (high jump, shot put and lone jump).

“I will miss them terribly,” admitted Smith, who will now coach the Pioneers girls’ outdoor team. “With the exception of Cole, who normally plays hockey, the other five have been with me for all four years and they were all big contributors this season.”

Lynnfield finished this Fall 2 season at 1-4 overall and were 1-3 in the CAL Baker Division as they finished in fourth place.

“We lost a lot of kids due to football being played at this time and that hurt,” admitted Smith, who lost 11 athletes to football. “We only had 16 kids which was the smallest roster in the league besides Amesbury. The kids we did have gave their all and that is all I can ask.”
